Rachael del blog Imagine Gnats me invitó al blog tour de su último patrón, la túnica Roly Poly. Aunque estoy enterrada en proyectos que no acabaré hasta el 2015, no me pude resistir al diseño de la espalda cruzada que tantas ganas tenía de hacer desde que vi la famosa entrada de Ana de Entre Hilos (enlace plis)

Rachael from Imagine Gnats invited me to join the Pattern Blog Tour of one of her designs, the Roly Poly tunic, which you surely have seen a lot in Pinterest already and you surely have a dozen more versions in your sewing mind because this pattern is terrific!

Esta versión es menos clásica y más moderna, con el cuerpo recto y la espalda más tapada, pero igualmente irresistible. A mi me sigue gustando lo vintage así que usé batista perforada como en este vestido que me encanta. Me acabo de dar cuenta de que el año pasado publiqué el vestido de la misma tela el mismo día que hoy !. Tengo la mente programada.

The Roly Poly pattern is Rachael´s interpretation of the classic crossover dress. I´d seen lots of ginghan, ric rac and cute vintage versions for little girls, but Rachael has made it more modern and wearable for older girls too. Having said that, I loooove vintage so I chose to make it in anglais broderie lined in cotton batiste. Exactly a year ago (spooky) I had made this dress in a similar fabric and loved it.

Por delante se abrocha con dos botones en los tirantes. También tiene un pequeño pliegue decorativo, es reversible y viene con la opción de hacerle bolsillos en las costuras. Yo decidí cortarlo de una sola pieza para no interrumpir los bordados con las costuras, pero mi parte favorita es la espalda

The front has two buttons and a centre small pleat for detail. There are optional side pockets that I didn´t make but would be a wise addition to a girls top. It´s also reversible for even more fun!

But I can stop admiring the back of this tunic

El patrón viene en pdf. Se imprime en casa y las instrucciones para montar los folios están incluidas. Está bien explicado, las fotografías son claras y las tallas van desde 6 meses a 10 años, por lo que se le puede dar mucho uso. Yo lo cosí en menos de dos horas incluyendo 40min de pelea para forrar los botones. Lo recomiendo totalmente para principiantes, creo que es uno de los patrones básicos para iniciarse en la costura. Ya veis que es solo una pieza:

The instructions are clear, sewing steps are well photographed, it can be printed and taped easily at home and the pattern lines with the different sizes are clearly drawn in colours. It comes in sizes 6 months to 10 years, which is something very appreciated by us mums to girls of different sizes. Sewing it took me less than two hours, including 40 minutes struggling to cover two buttons in the same fabric I used for the shorts (more about them next week). Because I chose to cut it in one piece you can sort of see here how easy this pattern is for a beginner.

Como tiene muchas partes redondeadas habría que hacer piquetes, etc, pero como lo odio, prefiero cortar con tijera de zig zag muy cerquita del pespunte y listo calisto

And rather than clipping and notching the curves, which I absolutely hate to death, I pinked all the seam allowances very close to the stitching line.

Como Rachael me regaló el patrón y me pidió que hiciera también una reseña, no quería deciros solo cosas buenas para no levantar sospechas, pero por mucho que le he metido los dedos no he encontrado nada en lo que este patrón flojee. As I was provided a free copy of this pattern for review I didn´t want to wow! too much but you know what? I tried hard to find something not so fantastic but I just couldn´t! Oh well yes, it´s written in english - but the pictures are clear enough to figure it out. I have a downloadable spanish-english sewing terms golssary HERE if you need it.

Otra bondad de este diseño es que se lleva poca tela. Para una talla 6 compré 70cms de batista perforada. Me salió por unos 10€ más o menos (gracias María y María por vuestro trabajo de detective para buscarme la más baratita)

Another good thing about this pattern is that I needed only 70 cms of fabric for a size 6, so I could indulge myself in a pricey batiste for once.

Liberty (I)

Mis vestidos favoritos son los sencillotes, los sosotes, los que no tienen apenas adornos pero están llenos de detallitos que no se ven. Quizás sea otra de mis de-formaciones de profesión. Como dice mi marido arquitecto, cuanto mejor nos ha salido el trabajo más desapercibido pasamos y menos se acuerdan de nosotros (y de nuestros antepasados, etc). Por eso quizás también me gustan tanto las telas "buenas", porque el frunce de un tejido de lino no es el frunce de un piqué sintético.

I love dresses that look simple at first sight, effortless, clean but not heres-a-rectangle-with-a hole-and-voila-type . Those with the right amount of flare, the right proportions and are flattering on the wearer. 

Tenía esta tela Liberty desde hace ya dos años, esperando, esperando, esperando hasta que por fin, usando como excusa una inminente reunión familiar, dejé el disfraz de fin de curso que tengo entre manos para dedicarme a algo mucho más estimulante. El patrón es el Class Picnic de Oliver and S. El original es una blusa, como la que hice en este pijama de unicornios, con dos modificaciones:

1. Le puse un volante largo pero con poco frunce para que no contrastara mucho con la silueta del cuerpo. La proporción es algo menos de una vez y media el ancho ¿se entiende?
2. Le acampané la manga porque este año se lleva mucho y porque en algunos blogs la llaman mangas de ángeles y mi hija tiene que tener un vestido con mangas de ángeles o le da algo. Ahora os pongo el punto.

Oliver and S Class Picnic Blouse is my right pattern. The yoke dimensions, the gathering ratio of the blouse and the depth of the neckline make it one of my favourite patterns. I still can´t differentiate the back from the front, despite being two diferent pattern pieces, but it just proves that the design looks good either way.

So my beloved Liberty fabric belonged to this pattern. 

I wanted to make it into a dress, but rather than just lengthening the blouse I made two more minor changes:

1. Added a big bottom ruffle (I´m pretty sure I was inspired by a post in Oliver and S, but I just can´t find it now)
2. Modified the sleeve to make it more like a flutter sleeve. Just slash and spread.

Coserlo fue muy fácil. Los Oliver and S son populares por lo claras que son sus instrucciones y por la calidad de los diseños. Están clavaos. Parecen hechos a medida para mis hijas y rara vez tengo que hacerle modificaciones. No me la podía jugar con mi mejor tela!. 

Como complemento del pelo hice un lazo en mi línea simplona, la misma mañana del estreno cuando descubrí que no tenía nada a conjunto mientras peinaba a mis hijas. Este detalle se hace en, literalmente y contados, cinco minutos. Es un patrón G R A T I S de Oliver and S, el bow hair tie descargable AQUÍ

As a last minute sewing,  the same morning I was getting my kids ready to leave for a family event, I decided to make my girls her hair complements too. They´re so ridiculously quick to sew!!! A F R E E pattern by Oliver and S of course, the Bow Hair Tie

A conjunto con este vestido de mi hija pequeña (5 años) hice otro para mi hija mayor (6 años), con la misma tela pero más de su estilo ninja. Si los astros siguen alineados esta semana en posición favorable para que yo bloguee, os lo enseñaré pronto. Si en cambio aparece alguna borrasca que los desalinea, desapareceré otra vez cual cucaracha rescondía detrás del frigorífico. Esperemos que no.

I made a matching outft for my eldest daughter, which I´d like to show you soon because I miss blogging as much as sewing. Husband is away for a few months and I´m taking things very very slowly. By the way, can anyone recommend any apparel fabric shops in Toronto, where a sweet husband doesn´t feel disorientated the second he steps into the shop?
