Costuras de Navidad (parte II):: Another Oliver and S School photo dress

Este es el vestido que hice para mi hija pequeña para el día de Nochevieja. El mismo que el de terciopelo pero sin bolsillos, porque además de tardar más de una hora en hacerlos me quedaron regulín, así que adiós mu buenas.

Second version on my favorite Oliver ans S pattern so far. This time I omitted the pockets because I was short of time, and instead of rushing and sewing fast and dodgy, I chose to simplify the pattern and take my time with the finishing details.

La única diferencia con el anterior es que le alargué las mangas y acorté el largo del vestido, pero el ancho es idéntico. Y me parece increíble porque mis hijas usan tallas de ropa diferentes pero este vestido, en la misma talla, les sienta como un guante a las dos. 

La tela es un piqué con unos rombos en la trama que se ve mejor de cerca en esta foto. Queda muy vistoso porque la tela con textura le dice mucho a la simpleza del corte.

The fabric is pique forming raised squares that suit the lines of the dress very well.

Para el interior no me comí el coco y usé forro rojo para no tener que cambiar de hilo. A pesar de que lo hice  más rápido está mejor acabado. ¿Veis los corchetes ocultos detrás del forro? Lo siento si sueno repelente pero es que me encanta cuando no se ven las trampas que hago tan a menudo....

I went for a red lining because I couldn´t think of any other colour to match, but now I love it. 

Y esto es TODO lo que he cosido en las últimas tres semanas. Bueno, técnicamente, porque he sacado muchos patrones y he cortado algo, pero no he sido muy productiva. El resto del mes voy a coser para mi, que tengo el libro de Colette pidiendo a gritos un poquito de atención ¿alguien me hace compañía?

Costuras de Navidad (parte I):: Oliver and S School photo dress

¿Alguien ha podido coser en Navidades?
Yo poco, pero he sacado algún ratillo bloguero para dar la cara, leer otros blogs y preparar mi próximo cose conmigo.
Espero volver a la normalidad pronto y contestar todos los correos que tengo pendientes pero mientras tanto os dejo con la primera entrega de mis costuras de Navidad.

Antes de las vacaciones empecé este vestido con la idea de hacer varios para Navidad. Como siempre, cuando los virus entran por mi puerta el planning salta por la ventana así que tuve que hacer recortes (yo también) y me quedé en solo un par de vestidos. Este al menos lo terminé a tiempo para Nochebuena... más o menos... porque el botón de la espalda no se lo pude coser y le cerré el cuello con unas puntadas a mano antes de salir de casa. Y descoserlas por la noche para poder ponerle el pijama.

I started this dress some weeks ago as a trial for the many dresses I wanted to make for Christmas. As usual, everything went pear shaped when a gang of viruses made their appearance and I had to lower my expectatives. I managed to finish this dress on time though. Sort of, because I couldn´t sew on the back button and had to stitch the collar closed just before leaving. And unpick the stitches at night.

El corte es recto con un poco de forma evasé y va entero forrado excepto las mangas. Se cierra con cremallera invisible en la espalda. Lo que más me gustó de este modelo fue el cuello, y ahora que lo he hecho me gusta todavía más. Va cortado al bies y queda de maravilla.

What I liked most about this pattern was the bias cut collar. It´s perfect.

El cuello se cierra en la espalda con un botoncito oculto que algún día coseré. Las instrucciones incluyen un método para insertar las cremalleras invisibles que yo no conocía, pero que no seguí a rajatabla porque no tenía ganas de pensar. Por lo visto es muy bueno pero lo hice como siempre lo hago, con la patilla especial y mucho cuidado

The instructions include a detailed method for inserting an invisible zipper. I did not follow it completely but I read it´s fantastic. Mine turned out OK at the first try, lucky me (I still have to sew on the button at the back)

La noche del 23 me empezó a entrar un sentimiento de culpa terrible porque a mi otra hija no le había podido terminar su vestido. Decidí que tenía que hacerle algo rápido, festivo y de la misma tela. Pensé que una de estas falditas globo eran perfectas así que me las ingenié para hacerle esta falda totalmente forrada en menos de dos horas. Hasta yo me sorprendo algunas veces.

The night before Christmas I felt terribly guilty because my second daughter didn´t have anything new to wear that day. I had to make something really fast, out of the same fabric and Christmassy. I thought a bubble skirt would be perfect so I went to my pinterest for inspiration, drafted my own patterns and a couple of hours later I had this skirt done!

Luego pensé que sería divertido que los tres fueran más o menos a juego, pero claro, ¿qué se puede hacer en menos de media hora con un retal de terciopelo rosa? Esto....

To complete the matchy siblings look I made this bow tie to my little boy. It was so much fun, he was the star of the party!!

Mientras espero para ir a la mercería...

Una vez más os voy a hacer caso y voy a ir a una mercería en condiciones a por los cierres de la trenca, lo que significa que ahora estoy parada porque ya he avanzado todo lo que podía antes de coser los botones. Cómo no tengo nada nuevo que mostrar, y no me puedo estar callada, os coloco este vestido del año pasado de Oliver and S.

Es el vestido que más le gusta a mi hija. La combinación clásica del cuello blanco siempre me ha gustado y tengo varios modelos que me sirvieron de inspiración en mi pinterest. El patrón ya no se vende en papel, pero sí en pdf en este enlace. La que tenga $9.95 de sobra lo podría estar cortando esta noche...

Y os dejo una foto de la acompañante mostrando otro vestido requeteblogueado del Burda con el coletero a juego. Viendo la foto me he dado cuenta que le voy a tener que poner un volante al bajo. Cómo crecen estos bichitos!

Top y shorts

Patrón: El top es el ruffled halter top de Oliver and S, y los pantalones son de Puppet Show Shorts, también de Oliver and S.
Telas: El lino del pantalón es reusado de una falda mía de Benetton del año chimpún. El algodón de flores tipo estampados Liberty of London es de… atención aquí… ¡Powerty of Valencia! En serio. Es lo que pone en el orillo de la tela. De mi tienda de telas local, claro está. Es una tela que ya usé para este Ice Cream dress que sale de espaldas en la foto. A pesar de ser una copia de las florecillas famosas, la calidad es bastante buena. Quizás debería llamarlo “interpretación” en lugar de “copia”, así le doy más caché.

Pattern: Ruffled halter Top by Oliver and S and Puppet Show shorts by Oliver and S too.
Fabrics: The shorts are made in repurposed linen from al old skirt of mine by Benetton. The print is similar to Liberty prints but, check this out, is from Powerty of Valencia!. No kidding. I got it from my local fabric store and that´s what it says on the selvedges. I used it last year for the ice cream dress on this picture. It´s pretty good stuff though, so I should call it an interpretation of Liberty fabrics rather than a copy.

El top tiene una construcción curiosa, por ejemplo: los dobladillos se hacen antes de coser los laterales. Aunque parece simple no lo es y no lo recomiendo a principiantes. El pantalón y yo ya hemos trabajado juntos y nos gustamos mutuamente, a pesar de que montar los bolsillos me lleva el mismo tiempo que hacer todo el resto del pantalón. Hay que fruncir, doblar en curva, acabar con bies, coser en curva… pero este es el resultado de cerca, y creo que merece la pena.

The top has a curious construction order, where you hem the front piece before sewing the side seams. It not as simple as it may look, and I wouldn´t recommend it to a newbie because there are a few laborious steps that might discourage anyone attempting this as their first pattern. The shorts and I are old friends, despite the fact that assembling the pockets takes me as long as making the rest of the shorts. To make them you have to gather, fold in and press a curve edge, cut, make and apply a bias binding and stitch a curved seam accurately. If I ever get a proper and even topstitch out of my machine, the result will be neater than this, but for the moment I think it´s OK.

Mi elección de telas la tenía clara. Algo con buena caída y fino para el top y lino para el pantalón, aunque la calidad de este lino de segunda mano deja mucho que desear. No hay quien le quite las arrugas. Este es el estado del pantalón al salir de la lavadora: ¿Algún voluntario para planchar los bolsillos?

I decided to use this fabric for the shorts because the skirt was too 90s and I didn´t wear it anymore, but I don´t like how it felt. It´s stiff and repels the iron. This is what I got right after the washing machine. Any volunteer to iron these pockets?

Por cierto que este top es el elegido para el próximo cose conmigo que empezará seguramente dentro de un par de semanas. Ya os iré poniendo al día. ¿Qué os parece? ¿Cuento con vosotras?

THE CHRISTMAS WINTER COAT

Después de un mes de costuras turbulentas este abrigo me ha metío en verea y lo he disfrutado enormemente. Una vez que conseguí desagobirme al no poder terminarlo para Navidad decidí tomarme mi tiempo y coserlo sin trampas. Os cuento el making of:

I´m far beyond happy with this little coat for my daughters for various reasons:

It´s my first coat ever

I have enjoyed every single stitch (except pulling out basting threads, which I absolutely hate)

I´ve made my first pair of welted pockets with satisfactory results

It´s cosy, it fits and it´s red

Patrón: Revista Burda Style Mod 147
Telas: La exterior es paño de lana y el forro viyela. 3euros el metro doble de ancho.
Botones: "prestados" de una chaqueta vaquera.

Pattern: Girl´s coat Mod 147 by Burda Style magazine 11/2010
Fabrics: Light wool for the exterior and viyella for the lining
Buttons: "On loan" from an old jacket.

Los botones son de adorno porque los lleva de presión. El cuello redondo lleva la entretela en la cara de arriba, como había leído yo en algunos libros, pero mi madre dice que mejor en la de abajo y las instrucciones de Burda así lo indican. Yo todavía no tengo opinión sobre el tema, ni un ojo tan fino como para ver la diferencia, la verdad. Con lo que me esmeré mucho fue con el planchado del cuello para que quedara perfectamente redondo y no poliédrico. Lo cosí con puntadas pequeñas y muy despacio, recorté el margen de costura inferior algo más que el superior para que no se marcara la línea por fuera, le hice piquetes y planché la costura abierta con mucha paciencia y mi super herramienta de planchado de cuellos: el rodillo de cocina. Cuando todavía estaba caliente le di la vuelta al cuello y le di forma con los dedos. La operación me llevó toda una sesión de noche pero quedó bien a la primera.

I took my time to construct the collar properly, as I was determined to get it right first time. I machine stitched it slowly around the curve, graded and clipped the seam allowances, pressed them open and turned it over while still warm so that I could shape it with my fingers. Final press and it looked great. The one thing that got me thinking was the face of the collar to which the interfacing should be applied to. The instructions said to the bottom part but I applied it to the upper collar. Why? Not sure.

Los bolsillos iba a saltármelos como es habitual, pero cambié de opinión y me atreví poque mis hijas necesitan meter sus tesoros en algún sitio que no sea mi bolso.

El forro va cosido a mano a las vistas y al dobladillo. No me ha quedado muy claro cual es la mejor forma de montarlo pero el resultado está bien.  Por cierto, la etiqueta lleva mi nombre y es un regalo de Anette.

The lining is sewn by hand. Probably not the smartest way buy I couldn´t come up with anything better. The label is a special present by Anette.

Y mirad qué detalle de alta costura me haa salido en la costura sobaquera!! Están pefectamente alineadas, y no es casualidad, es que me obsesiono con esos detalles y les dedico su tiempo. Y cambiando de tema, mi seguidor misterioso Alberto G, (que estoy segurísima de que no ha llegado hasta aquí leyendo), dice que no entiende eso de enseñarnos unas a otras las cosas que hacemos. Yo le digo que no es para que me digan que qué bonito es, porque para eso tengo a mi madre, sino porque con vuestros comentarios aprendo técnicas nuevas, truquillos etc,. pero reconozco que su observación me puso en crisis bloguera. Así que para no darle la razón os lanzo un par de cuestiones de interés mundial:

¿A qué parte del cuello se fija la entretela? 

¿Y se fija con vapor o en seco?

This last photo shows how I managed to line up the side seams. It´s a bit silly to show this off but, hey, I´m still learning and details like this are my humble take into the couture world.

Este fue uno de los vestidos mas rápidos de coser que hice este verano, y de los que más trote les dieron las niñas.
El patrón es el clásico vestido funda de almohada, que se llama así porque se hacía antiguamente con una funda de almohada. Simplemente se cortaba la forma de la sisa, se terminaba con un dobladillo y se insertaba un lazo para atarlo a los hombros. Me intrigaba mucho el modelo cuando lo vi en en el blog de Anna Maria Horner. Seguí su tutorial y me quedó muy simpático.

This is one of the quickest projects I made last summer. I was intrigued by the popular pillowcase dress so when I found Anna M Horner tutorial I had to make one. I didn't use a pillowcase though, but a soft ikea cotton fabric that gave the dress volume but gathered nicely.

In action

En Internet hay muchos otros tutoriales para hacer este vestido. Todos siguen el principio básico de unir dos rectángulos y hacer un dobladillo superior para insertar la cinta. Los que yo había visto no me gustaban mucho porque eran muy largos y con poco frunce, y realmente parecían fundas de almohada. Intenté hacerlo mas coqueto con el largo por encima de la rodilla, mucho frunce y dos buenos lazos fucsias, el más ancho que había en la mercería!.

There are lots of tutorials to sew this dress, and all of them share the same principle. Just two rectangules with a top casing to insert the ribbon. But the ones I came across had a lenght I'm not fond of, just below the knee. And many didn't have enough gathering for my like. So my version is shorter and very very gathered. I also couldn't resist the cuteness of the classic hot pink ribbons. 

The red dress is by Oliver and S. Another big hit last summer.

Mi mantita, me la ha hecho mamá :: It's my blanket, mum made it!

A mi niño le iba haciendo falta una mantita, y qué mejor oportunidad para usar mis telas favoritas? La confección es facilisima. Como me gusta emplear cosas que tengo alrededor y que ya no uso, pensé que podría forrar su mantita vieja con telas nuevas y voila! me encanta. Esta combinación de telas ya me rondaba en la cabeza desde hace tiempo pero no sabia como usarla. Un abrigo? No, el estampado es demasiado grande. Un bolso? No, el estampado es demasiado infantil. Así que esta es la solución perfecta.
La tela estampada es un algodón de Michael Miller y la de lunares es viyela.
La cosí en un rato, el único problema es que la manta interior es de tipo fleece y se estira mucho, y me salieron algunas bolsas pero no me importa, le da un aire homemade que me encanta.
Es un proyecto facilisimo y perfecto para las que estáis empezando a coser, así que si os animáis dejadme un comentario y os cuento como se hace.
Por cierto, que mi blusa con lazo ya está terminada y os la enseñaré en cuanto haga fotos decentes, por ahora os dejo una pequeña preview:

This is my little boy's new blanket. It's not actually new because I just sandwiched his old flannel blanket between my favourite fabrics convo. The print is kids zoo, a wonderful cotton by Michael Miller, and the backing is a red polka dots from my local fabric store. The making is easy peasy. Just a little annoying if you're looking for perfection because the flannel shifts and it pluckers but I don't mind. It gives the final look a vintage and homemade feeling that I love. I quilted it with diagonal straight lines, following the dots of the backing fabric so I got super straight lines (unusual in my frenzy sewing sessions). Anyway, I'm so happy with it that I carry it outdoors everyday, even if it's not cold enough. And HE likes it too.

As for my last mama project, my burda wanderlust blouse, it's finished. I still have to take decent pics but in the meantime here's a sneak peek:
