Project Run and Play week 3

Luis todavía no se ha pronunciado en cuanto a gustos de ropa. Se pone todo excepto lo que le pica, aprieta o lo que le molesta lo más mínimo. Necesita ropa muy cómoda para sus pirueta diarias y como es el niño de la casa, el más pequeño y todo lo se asocia a eso, pues su look se ha llevado las mejores telas que guardaba en el armario.

Unlike his older sisters, this boy of mine is not very opinionated when it comes to choosing his own clothes. He happily wears what mum sews for him, but, even if he doesn´t say it, I know what he likes. He describes things by how smooth, cool or rough they are, rather than by colour or shape. He loves fabrics that are soft to the touch and dislikes itchy labels on garments.

Linen, wool and cotton voile

EL ABRIGO
Quería algo poco recargado que él se pudiera poner solo. No le he puesto bolsillos ni parafernalias porque lo veo muy pequeñajo para tantas historias (y porque se guarda los plátanos masticados en los bolsillos). la tela de fuera es un paño de lana muy suave y el forro es un voile de algodón de Anna Maria Horner. El patrón es el abrigo Nituna de Figgy´s patterns

THE COAT
I made the coat in a soft and comfy wool that I´d kept for ages. It even smells nice! It´s fully lined in Anna Maria Horner cotton voile, which I read once that feels like butter. I just can´t get enough of it. The pattern is Figgy´s Nituna.

LA TÚNICA
Iba a hacerle una camisa con cuello pero el lino pedía una túnica. La alegré un poco con bies del mismo color que el forro. El patrón es el Sailboat top de Oliver and S.

THE TUNIC
I wanted to make an easy but fitted tunic and this linen was the perfect match. My husband bought it for me on a trip to Vietnam. I had asked him to go to Hanoi Fabric Market and buy linen or cotton, in plain colours, and "expensive looking". He got the most amazing stuff I could have imagined!.
I used Oliver and S Sailboat top pattern but instead of sewing the front facing on the inside, I put in on the outside and added piping in the same voile of the coat. The back facing and hem have also contrasting pieces in voile.

LOS PANTALONES
También de lino of course, y también les iba a poner bolsillos por todos lados pero fui quitándoselos todos hasta que se quedó la esencia del pantalón que es el patrón del pijama. Más cómdo imposible.

THE PANTS
My first idea was to sew a pair of cargo pants with all its pockets and fuziness but then I realised that I like linen pants as easy pants. Comfy and relaxed. The fabric is a blend of linen and cotton with lots of drape. After trying several pants patterns I settled on a self drafted PJ pattern with an elastic waist. Just like that. I made a fake zipper opening but it´s hardly visible so next time I´m sparing that too.

I love every piece of this outfit. I love that it kept me awake until veeeery late some nights and I love that I managed to finish it for HIM. I so badly wanted him to be featured this week... Being in PR&P has been an amazing experience so far, so thank you!

Más PR&P :: PR&P week 2

Despues de luchar contra mis instintos sevillanos para no coser un traje de flamenca, esta es mi versión del tema Lunares y Rayas para el Project Run & Play

Dots are second nature to me. I grew up in the south of Spain where girls have flamenco dresses even before they can walk. Sewing a flamenco dress was the easy option for me but I wanted to take it further. I got a typical polka dot popelin from my local store, a special kind of fabric sold for flamenco dresses because is stiff, crisp but light (also cheap). And then I spent days asking myself: What would be the opposite of a flamenco dress? ha! capri pants, a T-shirt and a A line jacket.

Quería usar los tres ingredientes básicos de los trajes de flamenca de mis hijas pero de forma totalmente diferente. Tela de lunares, volantes y piquillo.

I wanted to use the three main "ingredients" of my daughter´s flamenco dresses, polka dots, ric rac and ruffles

Con la tela de flamenca he hecho un pantalón pitillo y con el piquillo le hice las rayas a la camiseta

Luego le fui añadiendo detallitos como los botones a contraste, las presillas, los vivos del bolsillo del pantalón etc.

I made the pants entirely with the polka dot fabric, except for the pockets piping and the inside of the waist, where I used a tiny flower print. The pattern is by Burda Style Magazine

Because red polka dots can be quite overpowering and may turn the outfit into a Minni Mouse costume, I decided to smart it up a little by adding a clean and simple black band to the jacket for contrast. The red buttons were a must because if I don´t sew a red button I´m not happy. The pattern is Oliver and S Firefly jacket.

Under the jacket there´s a white T-shirt to which I stitched black ric rac forming the stripes. The pattern is Rae Flashback Skinny Tee, modified to add volume to the body. It´s tight in the chest but wider at the bottom. I´m not good with the serger so for the neck band I pretended I was sewing with woven and added a facing with a slit and a button loop instead. (My daughter picked her T shirt button)

Rayas y Lunares :: Stripes and Dots

Gracias a vuestros votos me quedo otra semana más en Project Run & Play ¡yupiiiiii!!!!! 

Mi niña está encantada porque le he dicho que hemos ganado y no veáis la ilusión que le ha hecho.

Esta semana tocan "Rayas y Lunares" peeeeero, no estoy cosiendo lo que estáis pensando que estoy cosiendo. ¡Me resisto a ser tan previsible!

Para mis amigas que no saben de qué va esto: resulta que soy y vivo en Sevilla (y olé), donde cada Abril se celebra un festival que dura siete días y seis noches (y olé) la Feria de Abril. Durante esa semana parece que la ciudad entera se traslada al recinto ferial a comer, a verse con los amigos, a pasear, a bailar y a otro montón de cosas que hay que ver para creer. Lo más curioso es que las mujeres y niñas van vestidas con trajes de flamenca, pero no en plan disfraz, nooooooooooooooooooo. Los modelos varían cada año y en cada feria se pone de moda un tipo de traje, un accesorio o un estampado. Hay modas y hay pasarelas, como el Salón Internacional de la Moda Flamenca SIMOF, donde se exponen las colecciones de los diseñadores para cada temporada como Juana Martín,  Vicky Martín Berrocal, Pilar Vera, Luchi Cabrera, etc, etc, etc

Las suertudas y muy feriantes tienen varios trajes de flamenca en el armario, algunos de firma, hechos a medida y estrenan uno cada año. Las niñas tienen ya el suyo desde bebés. Las sevillanas normalitas y poco feriantas tenemos un solo traje y le vamos sacando o poniendo volantes según varíe el cuerpo o la moda. Por toda Sevilla y provincia hay talleres de costura dedicados exclusivamente a la confección de trajes de flamenca y los hacen mejor que nadie, pero las que prefieren hacérselo ellas mismas no tienen problema porque las tiendas se llenan de telas de lunares especiales para los vestidos de flamenca. Popelines tiesos y muy ligeros en miles de colores con encajes, piquillos, cintas de falla y todo tipo de adornos en todas las tonalidades imaginables. Y no estoy exagerando. Intenta buscar una tela que no sea de flamenca de aquí a verano y ya verás lo difícil que es.

Mi madre nos ha cosido tropecientos trajes de flamenca pero yo no he hecho ni uno. No hay feria que alguien no me comente la suerte que tengo que sabiendo coser, puedo hacerme el traje a conjunto con las niñas y bla bla bla... Pues no. Coser un traje de flamenca me agobia con todas las letras. Para que el vestido quede bien hay que coser mucho y se me hace interminable. Los de mis hijas se los encargo a Loly que lleva toda la vida cosiendo trajes de flamenca y lo hace mejor que nadie. 

Para mi las telas de lunares tienen más significado asociado que para un finlandés, por ejemplo, y estoy muy acostumbrada a ellas. He usado rayas y lunares muchísimas veces en mis costuras, como este peto para Luis, en blusas y faldas para mi, esta mini, en mi primer vestido, en este otro vestido, en estos pantalones, en esta chaqueta,  como colour blocking, combinado con flores, y mi favorito hasta ahora

Thanks to your votes I made it through to the second week of Project Run & Play! The theme for this week is Stripes and Dots and I´m sure we´ll see gorgeous outfits because polka dots are stinking cute. 

Dots and stripes are patterns I´ve used a lot in my sewing, like in this dungaree, this blouse and this skirt for me, this other skirt, on my first dress, this other dress, pants for my boy,  this jacket,  as colour blocking, mixed  with flowers, and my favourite spotty dress so far

Para el tema de esta semana me he resistido al traje de lunares y he experimentado alejándome de lo obvio. También me lo he puesto difícil preguntándole a mi hija lo que quería y entre las dos cosas he intentado coser un conjunto coherente.

Veremos a ver que tal se recibe mi conjunto coherente este viernes :)

However, I found it quite challenging to work with dots, and I have to give you a bit of background to explain why.

I grew up in Seville, in the South of Spain, a popular city in Europe known for the April festival, sevillanas dance, and flamenco dresses. Almost every little girl in Seville has her first flamenco dress even before she can walk. My mum made dozens for us until the age I decided to rebel and not wear them anymore.

The Trajes de Flamenca are much more than the costumes women wear to the Feria de Abril.  There are catwalks, fashion weeks (SIMOF) and haute couture dresses (see designers like Juana Martín,  Vicky Martín Berrocal, Pilar Vera, Luchi Cabrera, etc ). In Seville and towns nearby there´s an important industry dedicated to flamenco outfits and many families live of that.

So, if you say polka dots I think of a flamenco dress.

For this week I´ve tried to use polka dots and stripes in a completely different way. Could I use ruffles, polka dots, ric rac and red in an outfit without it looking like a flamenco dress? We´ll see on Friday

Más Rosa Por Favor :: Anymore Pink?

Ya os puedo enseñar el vestido con el que concurso en Project Run and Play.

El tema de la semana era hacer un Remix de este vestido con tutorial de The Cottage Home, un vestido-princesa que, conociendo a mi cincoañera, no iba a admitir ninguna otra variación que no fuera más rosa por favor.

I have loved sewing this dress for my little one, as much as she loves wearing it, which is like a lot of love. It´s my first entry to PR&P competition where we had to remix the Party Dress by Cottage Home for this week. You can read my entry HERE

La tela transparente es un nosequé con flores bordadas y lentejuelas en el mismo tono, es muy suave y con una caída preciosa. Todo el vestido va forrado en tela de forro fucsia para darle más cuerpo y resaltar la de flores. El patrón original lo he dejado relativamente intacto, y las únicas modificaciones se las hice para acentuar aún más los brillos y el estampado de la tela:

Corté la espalda de una pieza para no romper las flores y que se vieran bien centradas y simétricas en todo el cuerpo.

As I started working with the delicate flowers sewn to the chiffon, I realised it would have been a crime to cut them out so I cut the back in one piece leaving off the back button closure.

Le puse botones forrados con presillas de hilo en el hombro para poder ponérselo, pero no fue necesario cremallera ni nada porque la cintura queda lo suficientemente ancha

I added the buttons to the shoulder seam and took advantage of the ease of the waist to pull the dress on without the need to open anywhere else. These type of closure feels very vintage to me and reminds me of the dresses my grandmother used to sew.

A la tela exterior del cuerpo le hice un poco de frunce que se recoge en la cintura para darle más interés

Para hacer la falda más princesa le hice un can can por separado

I added some gathering to the middle to the front bodice that you can´t appreciate in the pictures, but they´re there and look lovely because they add texture to the fabric. For the skirt, I couldn´t let a party dress go without an underkirt to add up volume

Mi marido me pregunta que cuando le voy a poder poner este vestido tan escandaloso pero es super ponible. Sirve para plantar margaritas

Project Run & Play

Ya sé que no ha pasado desapercibido que me desinflé a final de año.
Sin darme cuenta pasaban los días sin haberme podido sentar a terminar mis tutoriales, fotografiar mi última costura o responder a vuestros correos (tengo tantos sin contestar que ya he perdido la vergüenza). Justo cuando estaba en lo más profundo de mi apatía bloguera me llegó una invitación a participar en Project Run & Play. Al principio pensé que se habían equivocado de persona, bah, no pueden estar invitándome a mí. ¿en serio? ¿a mi? ¿que aprendí a coser hace tres tardes? ¿a mi que no he hecho patchwork ni manualidades en mi vida? ¿a mi que no sé usar más de dos colores en el mismo vestido?. Aún así acepté, completamente convencida de que era un tanteo y no iban a volver contactar conmigo.

Pero varias semanas después me llegó la confirmación, los temas y las reglas del concurso (6 páginas!!). Reconozco que me entró un pánico terrible pero a la vez muchísima ilusión, mucha más de la que os pueda contar aquí.

El concurso dura 6 semanas y hay 6 concursantes invitadas por las organizadoras más otras 2 elegidas mediante audiciones y votadas por los lectores. AQUÍ está mi presentación oficial junto con las de las demás concursantes. Cada semana hay que presentar un diseño basado en un tema común para todas las concursantes::

Semana 1: Hay que versionar el Party Dress, un vestido con tutorial de The cottage Mama (totalmente recomendable por cierto!)
Semana 2: Rayas y Lunares
Semana 3: Look para niños (ellos)
Semana 4: San Valentín
Semana 5: Convertir una camisa de hombre
Semana 6: Look personal o tema libre

Cada Viernes se publican todos los diseños y se abre la votación hasta el domingo. A la vez hay un jurado de tres blogueras muy conocidas que puntuan cada diseño. Se hace la media y la participante que menos puntuación consiga es la que no sigue. Por esos vuestros votos son tan importantes para nosotras!

Paralelo al concurso hay un Sew Along donde las lectoras cosen el mismo diseño semanalmente. Los vestidos que ya han hecho las lectoras para la primera semana los podéis ver AQUI.

El concurso empieza este viernes y no puedo enseñar lo que he preparado para esta semana pero sí os puedo decir que estoy muy contenta con la experiencia. Me propuse pasarlo bien y hacerlo lo mejor posible, a pesar de mis limitaciones con el tiempo, la falta de telas, mi cuarto de costura a medio montar, mis justas habilidades para la fotografía y la poca cooperación de mis hijos para posar, pero lo he conseguido.

Didn´t I tell you I´m in Project Run & Play? Did you know I´ve survived to the first week of frenzy sewing  and my design for The Party Dress Remix will be presented on Friday? I can´t wait to see what the other designers have come up with! It´s so much fun to sew with all of them plus the talented sew-alongers linking their creations on the PR&P blog!

En 2012 he blogueado muchas cosas pero tengo taaaaaantas otras que se quedaron en borrador, porque no las pude fotografiar a tiempo, porque se ensuciaron o rompieron a los diez minutos de salir del dormitorio, o porque simplemente ya se habían pasado de temporada.

I´ve blogged quite a few things in 2012 but there are so many other projects that weren´t photographed on time, were stained/ripped within the first 10 minutes after leaving the room or I just decided they weren´t bloggable anymore.

Casi cualquiera podría coserla. Simplemente se corta una camiseta grande, se sigue este tutorial de Momita y hecha en menos de 40 minutos.

Pero aunque se me ven más las costuras para niñas, lo que más coso con diferencia son pantalones. Como estos shorts del especial Burda Kids canibalizados de la ropa que me van dando cada vez que algún miembro de mi familia limpia los armarios.

You sure know how to make this. Take an old T shirt, follow this tutorial on BurdaStyle and apply an elastic waistband as in Made circle skirt. Done in less than 40min.

And although I´m known for sewing for my girls mainly, I´ve made far more pants than any other type of garment. Like these Burda shorts for my girls canibalised from my brother old clothesY una buena colección de pantalones cortos para mi Luisete

Los de la izquierda están hechos con el patrón de Oliver and S sketchbook y los otros con una modificación del pijama para dos (que podéis descargar AQUÍ). Las telas son de Ikea excepto la de abajo a la derecha que viene de una cortina materna. A lo mejor os suena la de cuadros azules porque es la misma que usé para mi primer par de pantalones allá por el 2010. Los uso casi a diario durante el verano, y como aún tengo tela pues le hice a mi hija esta falda tan mona con el tutorial de Made y ya somos la familia mantel.

Top and bottom left made with Oliver & S sketchbook pattern and in Ikea fabrics. Top and Bottom right is my own pattern, in  mum´s leftover curtain fabric and Ikea gingham. 

(Gingham fabric I used on my first ever pair of shorts back in 2010, which I still wear almost daily in summer)

In fact, I didn´t blog I got a bit carried away by this fabric and completed the matchy-matchy look with a circle skirt for my daughter (and yes, I still have more fabric at home and two other family members to match)

También empecé varios tutoriales que nunca publiqué, principalmente porque antes de terminarlos descubrí que ya estaban escritos y eran muy buenos así que ¿para qué molestarme?, como este de "Cómo trazar patrones con la ruleta" que ya escribió Ana de Entre Hilos

I also started writing two or three tutorials that took me so long to prepare that by the time they were almost done someone else had already done it, not only quicker but better. Like "How to trace patterns using the wheel"

O "como acortar el dobladillo a los pantalones del marido para que no se los tenga que llevar a su madre", que ya encontré varios por ahí incluso en You Tube. Aunque puede que este lo recupere y alguna vez lo termine porque creo que puedo aportar algún truquillo.

Pero lo que más tengo en mi borrador son entradas de cosas que me hago a mi misma. Odio hacerme fotos con el temporizador y odio aún más ver lo sosos que se ven mis conjuntos comparados con todas las fashion bloggers que se pasean por mi reader. Durante el año pasado me hice algo más de 10 prendas (5 de ellas con cuellos drapeados, uy, uy), entre ellas este vestido que no os acabé de mostrar

But my big neglect of all is myself. I hate taking pictures with the timer and hate hate hate seeing my poorly accesorised outfits. During 2012 I made at least 10 garments for me (5 of them featuring a cowl neck, oops) including this dress.

Me quedó bien y me lo he puesto mucho, pero las únicas fotos que me hice fueron estas y luego me quedé esperando a conseguir unas mejores hasta hoy. Igual me pasó con este otro vestido que probablemente ni siquiera sabíais que me había hecho (a pesar del cuello drapeado)

I took these lousy photographs and I waited and waited and waited for the right moment to finish the post, but it just didn´t happen. Same with this wow Burda dress that you didn´t even know I was sewing, despite having a cowl neck

A la izquierda la foto que me hice para verme el largo y las proporciones antes de terminarlo, y a la derecha la foto reciente de fin de año.

Como este muchos más, y el que más ridículo me parece es esta blusa que me ha hecho sabotaje todo el año, a pesar de ponérmela muchísimo, y que no he conseguido hacerle una buena foto. La "mejor" fue una que me hice en el baño de la oficina donde trabajo. No te digo más.

Another sad attemp to take a decent picture of my favourite top is this one, taken in the loo of my office after trying to photograph it on many outings with no successs. Should I explain why it didn´t see the light of day?
